Masters Of Anatomy Book
The Book Andrew Loomis created the Ideal Male and Female references over 70 years ago and since then generations of artists have used them to understand the complex proportions of human anatomy. But while the art world has evolved dramatically, these classic references have remained unchanged. We believe it's time for a refresh. Masters of Anatomy is a collection of artistic anatomy bringing together the work of over 130 famous artists like Adam Hughes, Joe Madureira (Joe Mad), Humberto Ramos, Franciso Herrera and others that have worked for Disney, Dreamworks, Pixar, Marvel and D.C. Each artist recreates the Ideal Male and Female illustrated in their own signature style and without the aid of external reference.
Each angle is neutral, symetrical and unposed showing the front, side and 3/4 front angles in a classic animation turn-around. The goal: to translate a decades-old sketch into something more relevant to a modern aesthetic. The result is a volume unlike anything that exists today. A must have for any aspiring artist; digital or traditional. * NOTE: The 3 angles presented will be Front, Side and 3/4 front - not the back angle. Each Artist will draw the figures in their own signature style to best of their ability in a completely finished, detailed Black & White render. The above picture will not influence the final concept.
The Artists We solicited work from artists all over the world working in very different industries - comic books, video games, animation, illustration and even children's books. Each artist was carefully chosen for their style, appeal and underlying knowledge of anatomy. Together they have produced 260 unique male and female anatomies with 780 angles all beautifully drawn for you to examine and explore. There we met a young concept artist named Edouard Guitton who was working as a lead designer for the famous Rackham Studios. It's was his designs that made Rackham miniatures an international sensation. Watching him sketch in the studio below was like magic!
He explained to us why the sculpts based on his drawings were so appealing. 'sculpting and drawing is the same - it's all about the silhouette. Details and realism are secondary, they only get in the way; the silhouette is what really matters.' It was a revelation!
Those words floated around in our minds for the next few years until we began working on a video tutorial about anatomy. We wanted to provide our sculptors with an in-depth level of instruction but we felt the video by itself was too much of an instructional tool; too rigid. We needed something to stoke the creative fires, something that could embody Edouard's ideas about the silhouette. Thus, was Masters of Anatomy born. Loish Mattias Adolfsson t-wei tincan21 Why Commission New Work? It became evident in the early stages of research that well-drawn examples of neutral anatomy turnarounds like Loomis's were rare and difficult to find. What we did manage to scrape together was of generally poor quality. What we became aware of instead, browsing hundreds of art blogs, was the huge number of brilliant artists out there. But even among their work there were few examples of neutral anatomy turnarounds.
We then understood why so many amateur sculptors and 3D artists were having a difficult time making unique figures - a lack of well-drawn reference art. Who Is This Book For? This book is for any artist interested in human anatomy and proportions. By examining the subtle differences between similar drawings you will strengthen your knowledge of the human anatomy and begin to recognize which areas contain the majority of deviations. Though Loomis's sketches are a fantastic tool, we believe that a single reference is limiting and counter-intuitive to creative minds.

It makes the learning curve rigid and inflexible. We believe multiple references are needed to examine the true definition of an 'ideal'. And since the drawings appear in the same place on each page it makes side-by-side comparison much easier and more fun. The end goal is to help artists develop their own unique style and voice. Loopy Dave Dan Seddon Luis Gadea Francis Vallejo The Problem with Anatomy Books The biggest problem with current anatomy books is the creative disadvantage of having only one artist who is trying to appeal to the broadest market possible.
Popular or experimental anatomy is too risky to publish using this model. This diminishes the concept of inventive design. In the end you're left with a heavy volume where only a handful of pages are of any use. What we've done is present 260 unique figures in the three most helpful angles. Nothing less nothing more.
The pro's of the book 1. No idea how large because there are no page numbers in the book (see #1 below under cons) 2.It is a really cool book in the sense you can see how many different artistic styles are out there. It is fun to see how so many artists can interpret the human form so differently. If you are struggling drawing the male or female physique you could copy from this book to help improve.
Some complaints I have about the book. There is no page numbers in the book so it is hard to reference quickly an artist you want to find. It has a list of artists in the index but again no page numbers listed with the artists name or on the pages where that artists work appears.
To me this is sloppy and reduces the effectiveness of the book. Also I know it is nit picky it bothered me that all artwork appears in the book alphabetical order by the artists first name. I have never seen peoples names itemized this way. So if you want to find 'Joe Madureira.' You need to go to to J-O-E instead of with M's.
I would say that this book is cool to see a bunch of artists styles. So for a fun flip through book I would say get it. But as a book to help you learn to draw it really don't think it fits that need. For example Humberto Ramos being quoted in the promotion for this book saying 'This is the book I wish I had when I was learning to draw.' I feel it does little for someone actually wanting to learn to draw.
4.The lack of angles. The same 3 repetitive angles got old fast and if you do find it useful as an artists you really only need maybe 3 or 4 artists views of those angles to get the gist of the muscle structure and the rest just becomes overkill. Would have been nice to have different parts of the book dedicating to addressing different things. Faces, hands, feet, other angles etc. 5.The cover is the absolute ugliest cover I have seen of any of the art books I own.
I am an artist and a graphic designer and everything about it bothers me. Font, logo, symmetry, pictures used.
All of it in my opinion is bad. The entire book is in black and white. Seems like such a shame because in a bunch of the drawings the artists took the time to shade in grey scale digitally so you know that the ability/talent to do color was there. (Once you have a grey scale image you can really add color with just a simple multiple layer in Photoshop.
So really the bulk of labor was done. Color would have been a simple step to add) This was nothing more than a cost saving measure by the creator and on such an EXPENSIVE book I believe it should have delivered more of a premium product to match the asking price. Create Pdf File From Vb6 Code. I paid $120 for 1 hardcover and 1 softcover and is was shipped in an un-padded cardboard mailer resulting in a few huge dents in the book. So if you are going to order this book through the links on this sites home page I would say expect your book to be damaged when it arrives.
Editor missed a major issue. There was duplicates of one artists submitted work taking up 4 pages instead of 2.
The fact I paid more for this art book than any other art book that I own meant for me I was expecting something premium! While it was cool to flip through once and see drawings from a few of my favorite artists it fell far short of what I was anticipating for the price paid. (This includes the slip case which was promised when purchased than mysteriously removed as a feature) It felt like cost was saved everywhere so the creator could pocket as much money as possible. Cover design, book quality and and the entire book being in black and white fell way way short of what I was expecting for such a premium price. Definitely not worth the $80(for the hardcover) I paid through kickstarter. If you can get this on Amazon at a later date for $25-$30 ish I would say do it.
Otherwise I would suggest a pass.

It seems the book will be an anatomy/physiology type book but only of a full figure in 3 directions and each page will be drawn by a different artist. So basically the book will be the same pose drawn over and over for 200 pages. Which doesn't seem very helpful for an anatomy book or for an art book. I would want some variety in the poses. Different styles, realistic to cartoons, yes.
Same poses, different styles. 100 different artists styles of same poses in one book or 100 different poses in one single artists style in most books. I've yet to find and don't expect there to ever be a perfect book to cover many artists and many poses. This one in particular I think, for me anyway, it's just hard to visualize what we will actually get.
All finished, partial finishes, rough poses, mixes of all of this, in the various artists' styles. If every one of these 100 artist have 10 years of experience, that's a 1000 years of experience. Yea 1000 years of repeating most of the same 10 years of experience. I really hate when people put it together like this, It's not like their experience as a group get 100 times as better just because they are 100 artists.
They have all struggled with learning the basics for 1~year, then the more advanced for 4~ years and then probably have trained specific types of artsy for the other 5~ years. It's not like they all have focused on completely different things and when they collect their pictures you get what someone would only learn in 1000 years. Don't get me wrong, they are probably all good artists and that. But it's more like they get 100 different versions of 10 years of experience than that they mega morph in to some Super Art Zord.
